There is something quietly magical about skiing after dark. The crowds thin out, the lights turn the slope into a corridor of white, and the mountain that felt busy at noon suddenly belongs to you. At Holiday Mountain every slope and trail is lit for night skiing and riding — and for beginners, that evening session is often the smartest time to learn.
Why evenings suit beginners
Weekday evenings — Tuesday through Thursday, 3:00 to 8:00 pm — are the quietest hours on the mountain. Shorter lift lines mean more runs per hour, and a relaxed slope means less pressure when you are linking your first turns. The air is firmer than midday slush, which holds an edge better, and the lights remove the flat-light problem that makes overcast afternoons so tricky.
How to prepare for a night session
- Layer up. Temperatures drop fast after sunset. A base layer, insulated mid layer and a shell beat one thick jacket.
- Bring a clear or yellow lens. Dark goggles that work at noon are useless under stadium lights.
- Book a lesson for the first hour. Instructors are less busy in the evening, so you often get near-private attention at group prices.
- Warm your boots. Cold plastic is stiff plastic — keep skis and boots in the car, not the trunk, on the way up.
Etiquette under the lights
Night sessions mix race-training gates with recreational skiers. The rule of thumb is the same as daytime: people downhill have the right of way, stop where you are visible from above, and call your line when overtaking. If you see a closed sign at the top of a trail — believe it: grooming crews work at night, and ropes move.
Make an evening of it
Monticello is a 20-minute drive from most of Sullivan County’s lodges and diners. An evening session plus a late dinner is one of the best cheap ski nights in New York — lift tickets at small resorts cost a fraction of the big Catskills names, and the money you save pays for the burger afterwards.
